IRI hosts Metrology Day, on May 14, 2007
in collaboration with QUALEB and LNE (Laboratoire National des Essais), France
Dr. Ali Berro, Director of Qualeb, the quality project of the Ministry of Economy, insisted on the importance of elaborating on a new law on metrology through a panel of Lebanese and European experts.
“This legislation must conform to international criteria” Dr. Berro stated during the metrology seminar organized by the Quality Club at IRI, and under the patronage of Their Excellencies Minister Sami Haddad, and Minister Michel Pharaon.
The Director General of IRI, Dr. Bassam Frenn, explained how metrology is closely linked to quality and industrial modernization. He also highlighted the crucial need for enterprises to master the practice of “measuring” in the production process. “I admit that it may not be an easy task, but it is definitely feasible” Dr. Frenn commented, adding “it is for this reason that I asked LNE, an international-level reference, to be present here today”.
Dr. Bassam Frenn reiterated that many of IRI’s laboratories have been accredited since 2004 by the German accreditation body DAP, which is considered among the most rigorous in Europe. He then revealed “Our objective is to add, with each DAP visit, a new category of accredited laboratories.”
Among the speakers during Metrology Day were:
- Mr. Frits Hendriks from Qualeb elaborated on the current legal framework and metrology infrastructure in Lebanon
- Dr. Imad Hage Chéhadé, Technology and Development Director at IRI, presented, in detail, the capacity of the metrology unit at IRI.
- Mrs. Maguelonne Chambon and Mr. Jean-François Assier, from LNE, expanded on the European and French models as well as technical details such as the function of metrology in industry, metrology parameters, etc.
