Objectives of Six Sigma    



The Quality Club at the Industrial Research Institute in collaboration with the international body COTECNA organized a seminar on the “Objectives of Six Sigma”. It was held on the 3rd of May 2006 in the Seminar Hall of the Industrial Research Institute. The workshop aimed to give awareness of the 6 techniques of Sigma, approved in big international industrial enterprises, to improve the capability and reduce the defects in any process in order to satisfy the customer.

The Director General of the Ministry of Agriculture Louis Lashed, the Director General of the Ministry of Industry represented by Geary Al Khoury, the European Lebanese Center of Industrial Modernization Director Raja Habre, the Director of the Lebanese Cleaner Production Center Ali Yaacoub, the vice-president of the COTECNA enterprise Alison Bourgeois, the Regional Director of M. E. COTECNA Joe Saliba, the Representative of COTECNA Lebanon Simon Tawilé, and the expert in the COTECNA enterprise Christophe Renard attended the Seminar, in addition to the participation of representatives from the Lebanese industrial enterprises, the divisions & units heads and engineers of the industrial research institute


The Director General of the industrial research institute Bassam Frenn opened the ceremony by clarifying that the 6 Sigma targets were prepared, adopted and approved by international industrial enterprises like Motorola, General Electric, Siemens, Kodak and other... They are also used by insurance, communications and medical enterprises. These techniques aim at developing any existing scientific and productive path. He added that the Industrial Research Institute primary target is to reach the adoption of a sustainable view to the development of the industrial sector. He stressed on encouraging the industrialists to adopt the new measures and standards, as well as their application in their industries, which will be of a big support to the export and finding new external markets for their products.

Then the expert Christophe Renard gave a presentation and a detailed explanation on Sigma targets, confirming their high return on the industrial enterprises which applied them. He gave as an example General Electric that gained 5 points on the three first years of the implementation of these principles, the value of its shares exceeded 15 % and it saved 2 billions of American dollars.

At the end of the day, a dialogue was held with the participants inquiring on the best ways to implement the Sigma principles.
